When was the last time you had a really good belly laugh? It feels good, doesn’t it? That’s because laughter can have a positive effect on your quality of life and health.
When you’re laughing, you’re in good company. Maybe there’s someone in your life who makes you laugh often. Have you talked with that person lately? Actress Audrey Hepburn once said, “I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multiple of ills.”
Even sacred scripture talks about the importance of laughter. Consider the wisdom book of Proverbs, for example, which says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). Or an old Yiddish proverb, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.” Yes, laughter is essential for our mind, body and spiritual wellness.
According to Mayo Clinic staff, laughter can relieve stress and provide a number of health benefits. Laughter stimulates oxygen to your heart, lungs and muscles, and it increases a positive “endorphin rush” to your brain, while helping to promote relaxation, according to Clinic staff. The effects can be lasting to help boost relaxation, relieve pain and increase your mood overall.
