Meet Laura

Cry when you want to cry. Let those tears flow, feel the release...and then go do something that makes you smile. :)
— Laura

Hi, I'm:  Laura!

My health challenge:  I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 25.

My inspiration:  All of the loving beings in my life who are exceptionally supportive: my hoop—that beautiful circle with no beginning or end, bearing infinite possibilities; traveling; meeting people from all over the world; nature; music!

My words of inspiration:  For those who are just beginning their own health journey, remember that laughter is the best medicine (besides eating whole foods, of course...no chemicals!). Surround yourself with those who give you positive energy, do things that bring you joy and tranquility. Cry when you want to cry. Let those tears flow, feel the release...and then go do something that makes you smile.  :)

My reflections about mymessenger:  I would have LOVED to have had mymessenger while going through my journey. Not only would it have been a tremendous help to keep organized with appointments, information, bills, etc., but it is incredibly inspirational and brought me a sense of comfort and peace when I first saw it.  It is so much more than I could have ever imagined.

My “life list:”  If I had to pick just one "life list" goal, the first thing that comes to mind is to see as much of this beautiful world as possible.

"A newly diagnosed serious illness can be overwhelming, leaving the patient and family feeling frightened and vulnerable. Medicine can deliver the science but often falls far short on meeting the humanistic needs. I have realized my own shortcomings in this area many times when working with families in our time pressed world of medical efficiency. mymessenger is designed to fill that void. It teaches how to organize the endless new data that floods the patient and family, creating empowerment while reducing the sense of vulnerability. The mind–body connection is emphasized. Countless studies have proven the essential role this plays in having a sense of well-being, recovery, and even survival.  And perhaps most importantly, it aims to create a community of shared experiences that can provide knowledge, wisdom and camaraderie. The sense of isolation that comes with a serious illness can often be the cruelest consequence of all. The designers of mymessenger, Mary Jo and Tesha, do not want anyone to take that journey alone." -Charles Durkee, M.D., pediatric urologist

"As a survivor and breast cancer surgeon myself, I know how overwhelming and confusing the journey through a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be. The more organized you can be, the easier the journey can be. mymessenger is an important communication tool for patients like no other available. It provides a way to track medical information and progress but also as a health care diary to record symptoms, experiences, emotions, triumphs and tribulations. This personal health diary would make an excellent gift for that friend or family member to show them you are supporting them through this difficult time." -Kelli Pettit, M.D., breast cancer surgeon

"mymessenger is an essential tool for survivorship. I wish I would have had it for my own journey. I would have carried it back and forth with me for all my appointments. I could have tracked my medications and surgeries easier and even used it to capture some of my journaling thoughts. When I was in surgery, my husband could have used it as a handy reference to reach out to our loved ones. Everything is included in one place." -Valerie Bonne, M.D., cancer survivor and pulmonologist
